Human gastroenteritis is a multifactorial disease. It can be caused by viruses (Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Astrovirus, Norwalk virus, etc), by bacteria such as Salmonella and by protozoan organisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
In infants under 1 year diarrhoea has a viral aethiology in 45% of cases. In children under 4 years, viruses account for 40% of cases.
Of these cases Adenovirus is the second most frequently diagnosed accounting for 15-25%.
Unlike Rotavirus, Adenovirus have little seasonal variation. The Adenovirus species group is divided into 6 subgroups (A-F). Subgroup F contains the 40/41 serotypes that are specially associated with childhood gastroenteritis.
